Writing Exercises
First, we need to make a straight line, then we need to put a little dot on top of it, and that's how you write an 'i'...
While my handwriting could definitely use practice (anything in lowercase is illegible; anything in uppercase is heading in that direction), these aren't those types of writing exercises.
Recently, my creative output has been anemic. Part of that is due to a mini-vacation that had me outdoors for most of last week, and part of that has been due to a bit of a journey into the creative doldrums that's lasted more than a few weeks.
My best method for fighting through the morass is usually setting bounds around both my theme and my time. My guitar playing lately has been very rote, with nothing to advance either my technical ability or creative output. As a result, I'm working with my instructor to develop mini-themes between lessons. This week is to write a happy song in a minor key.
Similarly, I often wander about for themes on the blog. Should I wait to compose something of substance, post something smaller here or on LinkedIn to gain more impressions there, or simply throw caution to the wind and post whatever's on my mind to keep the habit up?
If you haven't guessed, I'm going to try implementing the last option. I'll keep some structure, but rather than try to write 1-2 posts of ~1000 words per week, I'll opt for a shorter 100-250 words per day format (at least for weekdays).
My expectation here is that it's a post I can write in 1 sitting, so I don't hem and haw over a theme and the editing process, causing me to procrastinate. I'm reserving the right to publish it unedited, but at such a short length, editing shouldn't be an impediment. I'm also reserving the right to publish a doodle (pixilated or otherwise) in lieu of a day's post. I'd like to keep that bound to 15-30 minutes' worth of effort to correspond to the 100-200 word prose limit I'm imposing. Hell, I may even try a short story.
Until next time, my human and robot friends.
[P.S. If you're curious, the above is 362 words and took me about 25 minutes to write and edit.]
