Well, It Was Nice While It Lasted
Teller sent out notice this morning that they're shutting down their API by the end of the week. I was pretty bummed, given the robustness of the offering and the number of institutions allowed. My immediate thought was to settle on email scraping options if my banks would send me balance summaries on a weekly basis.
I was quickly disabused of that notion when I saw that my weekly summaries are simply updates on my current balance, not my actual transactions.
At that rate, I assumed I'd either maintain my existing solution (which isn't bad and has been holding up for all of 2026 but does require my manual care), pony up more cash for a more robust solution (which may be a non-starter - anything north of $20/month isn't something I'm willing to spend money on if I don't have a business plan at the ready), or wait for inspiration.
Well, inspiration came much faster than expected. A simple search for "Teller replacements" keyed me into SimpleFIN an open protocol that banks are currently using to allow users access to their data. It does charge a fee, but that fee is $15 per year (plus tax), and is the solution that I probably should've gone with all along.
In the approximately 7 hours since I've discovered it - along with my new friend, spec-kit - I've started yanking out the old code for Teller and replacing it with the SimpleFIN. So far, so good.
Until next time, my human and robot friends.
